We know well-managed marine fisheries and fish farms are integral to the sustainability of the seafood industry and the habitats that support it. That’s why we seek to established Fishery Improvement Projects with our suppliers.
Fishery Improvement Projects combine monetary support with access to professional resources that can help individual fisheries learn about and put into place best practices for sustainability.
Through strategic planning, responsible management and the on-going education of sustainable practices at the operational and work-force levels, we can help ensure that fresh seafood is available now and in the future.
Chefs Trading is proud to say that we have been and will continue to encourage and support efforts toward sustainability and socially responsibility as we continue to contribute to this initiative we encourage. Everyone from all stakeholders and even the consumers to join in the fight and support efforts such as SFP's Target 75 Initiative.
If every business that buys seafood sent a clear message to their supplier that they wanted their seafood to be from sources that are either sustainable or working towards sustainability (for instance, through fishery improvement projects) then we could achieve the 75% transformation very quickly. The message would go down the supply chain and the producers would have the market incentive to adopt more sustainable practices.
Ultimately, T75 is a vehicle for industry to build the pressure for sustainable seafood until it becomes irresistible. By publicly supporting T75, a business is sending a clear message that it is serious about sustainable seafood and that it is taking practical steps to achieve that goal. If producers understand that a critical part of their customer base is demanding sustainability, they will take action through fishery improvement projects to deliver the necessary change.
